HIPAA
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) provides portability of health coverage by limiting pre-existing limitations and exclusions in group health plans. This act also requires individual insurance policies to offer coverage without pre-existing limitations to qualified beneficiaries who have had prior group coverage. HIPAA is in effect for plan years beginning after June 30, 1996. HIPAA administration services offered by BenefitsAssist, inc.:
- HIPAA certificates provided for all qualified beneficiaries upon losing coverage under the group health plan
- Certificates issued when a qualified beneficiary loses coverage under COBRA
- Certificates issued upon request, from the qualified beneficiary, up to 24 months after loss of coverage
